Conor Hourihane delighted for Barnsley youngster Charlie Lennon after debut goal

Conor Hourihane was “delighted” for “patient” youngster Charlie Lennon after his stoppage-time strike on his debut rescued a point for Barnsley at home to Wigan.

Joe Taylor’s goal looked to be the difference between the two sides but Lennon, making his first appearance since joining the Reds in January, bundled the ball home in the sixth minute of time added on after Callum Wright was sent off late on.

Hourihane said: “I’m delighted for him – he’s been really patient.

“He’s come to see me a couple of times.

“He’s worked really hard in training, always concentrating in meetings and knowing where to be.

“Hopefully now he can build on that and get more minutes between now and the end of the season.”

Taylor opened the scoring when he latched onto Sam Tickle’s long ball forward and cheekily lobbed Owen Goodman.

Wright was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 88th minute after hitting a post in the first half.

Corey O’Keeffe rattled the woodwork in the second minute of nine added on before Lennon sent the home fans wild as he bundled home an equaliser.

Hourihane was pleased with the performance after the break, adding: “I think the subs made a difference, so that’s a pleasing aspect.

“I want to give credit to the subs tonight because they’ve really come on and changed the outlook of the game.”

Wigan boss Gary Caldwell thought his side deserved all three points, saying: “I thought we were the better team.

“First half in particular, I thought we were excellent.

“The big frustration is that we don’t score more goals in that period.

“When you draw a game, you have to go into the next game and win it for it to become a really good point.”

Caldwell was unhappy with the red card decision, and added: “I think the referee would have given loads of yellow cards if both of those are yellow cards.

“It’s happened to us too many times this year, referees making decisions that go against us.

“Something needs to change.

“They say over the course of the season it will go for you at some point, so I’m expecting a lot of luck in the next nine games and a lot of good decisions to go for us.”
