Oldham boss Micky Mellon believes his side have turned a corner after their 3-0 hammering of Gillingham.
The Latics picked up their first away points of the year thanks to goals from Calum Kavanagh, Emmanuel Monthe and Mike Fondop.
“We’ve got ourselves a really good three points,” said Mellon, after his side secured successive league wins for the first time since September.
“For the first 20 to 25 minutes I think that was the best performance of the season.
“But then we stopped doing the stuff that put us into the position that we were in. We came off the non-negotiables if you like.
“We told them what was necessary at half-time for us to get something out of the game.
“My goalkeeper’s made a couple of good saves.
“It’s been a good week. We understand where the levels need to be to win games in this league.
“We’d kind of fallen off that a little bit if I’m honest. All credit to the players and the staff probably because we’ve pushed them.
“Nothing has been achieved yet. I expect Oldham to be hitting a level of consistency and producing more results like that so we can be among the top end teams who do do that.
“That’s the challenge for us to keep hitting those levels.
“We’re a new team to this level even though we have players who are experienced, we’re looking at a new division and we know what the asks are to get results.”
Gareth Ainsworth labelled Gills’ performance the “worst” during his spell at the club as they slumped to a third straight defeat.
He said: “That’s the worst performance, definitely, by far since I’ve been here.
“It’s a stark reminder of the job I’ve got to do.
“I didn’t see it coming and it wasn’t good enough.
“I’ve had a go at the boys at the end of the game. It’s not acceptable.
“There’s not much more than I can say really. We were way short of the level and that’s why we’ve lost 3-0.
“We didn’t defend well at all in that first 20 minutes. They bullied us.
“The third goal just summed up the performance, it just wasn’t good enough.
“It wasn’t good enough for me, the fans or for Gillingham and there will be changes for sure.
“They’re football fans, they pay the money. Win, lose or draw they want their team to compete and we didn’t do that.
“We’ve got to give Oldham some credit and we’ve got to move on and make sure we’re far better next week.”
