John McGlynn welcomes home draw after Falkirk beat Stenhousemuir in Scottish Cup

Falkirk manager John McGlynn welcomed a home draw after his side beat local rivals Stenhousemuir in the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup.

The Bairns did not have it easy at Ochilview against a well-organised and determined Stenny defence but extra-time goals from Brad Spencer and Barney Stewart earned a 2-0 victory.

McGlynn’s side were then paired with either Dundee United or Spartans in the last eight.

“Delighted that we’ve got a home draw,” he said. “We’ve been away the last two rounds so delighted to get a home tie.

“When you get to the quarter-finals, there’s not going to be any easy games but we’re at home, so we’re pleased.”

Falkirk found the Stenhousemuir defence and goalkeeper Darren Jamieson in resolute form until Spencer broke the deadlock from almost 30 yards.

“A bit of quality in the final phase of the pitch would have helped a bit quicker,” McGlynn said.

“We didn’t really want to go through the extra 30 minutes as we’ve got a big game on Wednesday night. But that’s what it took.

“It was all about that first goal. If we’d got it early in the game, we’d have maybe relaxed a little bit and maybe had a bit more composure in front of the goals. But it took us too long, to be honest.

“It was difficult, and they made it difficult. They’re used to winning games and they’ve got an amazing home record here. You’ve got to take these things into consideration.”

Stenny boss Gary Naysmith was “immensely proud” of his players.

“We had a game plan and the players stuck to it, even when we had to make changes,” he said. “Everybody knew what they were doing.

“We made it very, very difficult for Falkirk to break us down.

“We gave up the wider areas and tried to deal with crosses, and I thought we dealt with crosses really, really well.

“And it took an unbelievable strike to actually eventually break us down.”
