Immanuel Feyi-Waboso to miss England’s Six Nations opener against Wales

England have suffered a blow on the eve of their Guinness Six Nations opener against Wales after Immanuel Feyi-Waboso was ruled out by a leg muscle injury.

Feyi-Waboso failed to complete Thursday’s training session and scrum coach Tom Harrison has confirmed the explosive 23-year-old will sit out the Allianz Stadium showdown.

Tom Roebuck fills the vacancy on the right wing in what will be his first appearance since starting against New Zealand in November, with a toe problem keeping him sidelined.

England are unable to provide a date for Feyi-Waboso’s return but it will be hoped he recovers in time for the pivotal round two clash with Scotland at Murrayfield on February 14.

It is an unfortunate development for the electric Exeter wing given he missed all of last year’s Six Nations after undergoing shoulder surgery, making his comeback on the summer tour against the USA.

Roebuck impressed during starts against Australia and New Zealand in November only for a broken toe to cut short his campaign and keep him in the treatment room since.

The 25-year-old was initially ruled out against Wales with Steve Borthwick declaring on Monday that he needed “another week or so”, but he has now been thrust into the starting XV ahead of Elliot Daly.

“Steve said the other day he’d be ready in a couple of days. In an ideal world we’d have given him an extra week, but the world isn’t ideal as we know,” Harrison said.

“He trained fully on Thursday and he’s been exceptional around the squad. I’m excited to see him go.

“We do a really good job of what ifs and what might happen and combinations. Does it disrupt some plans? Yes it does, because it’s changing a player.

“But we’ve done everything we can to make sure the next player is ready.”
