Aaron Drinan’s 23rd goal of the season earns Swindon victory at Harrogate

Aaron Drinan’s 23rd goal of the season in all competitions secured a 1-0 victory for Swindon at bottom-of-the-table Harrogate.

The Sulphurites held out until the 84th minute before being condemned to a 20th league game without a win by Drinan’s clinical penalty.

Earlier, Harrogate defender Cathal Heffernan had gone closest to opening the first-half scoring, albeit at the wrong end of the pitch.

The ex-Newcastle reserve’s header back to Henry Gray sailed over the home keeper’s head but, to his relief and good fortune, bounced narrowly wide.

Harrogate showed spirit after the break with Connor Ripley parrying away a Bryn Morris piledriver and then denying Emmerson Sutton from point-blank range.

But Gray was also needed to tip over Michael Olakigbe’s strike and smother a Fletcher Holman effort before the latter was clipped by the on-loan Ipswich keeper as he raced onto a through ball.

Drinan made no mistake from the subsequent spot-kick, drilling into Gray’s bottom-right corner.

His goal also ended a run of three straight away defeats for Ian Holloway’s Robins.
