Inverness still top despite letting lead slip against Queen of the South

Inverness remain top of Scottish League One despite twice throwing one-goal leads away in a battling 2-2 draw at promotion rivals Queen of the South.

Liam Sole and Jordan Alonge both put Caley Thistle in front but they were pegged back twice by goals from Kai Kennedy and Michael Hewitt, who struck in the 79th minute for the third-placed Doonhamers.

Stenhousemuir were unable to take advantage and remain locked on 41 points with Inverness after a 2-2 draw of their own at home to Peterhead.

However, it could have been much worse as they trailed 2-0 heading into the final six minutes as Kieran Shanks and Andrew McCarthy struck either side of half-time for Peterhead.

But Matthew Aitken and Dale Carrick headed home within moments of each other as the Warriors claimed a share of the spoils, with Inverness remaining top on goal difference.

Taylor Sutherland’s hat-trick helped Montrose move up to fifth after a 3-2 win at out-of-form East Fife.

Sam Culbert and an Andrew Steeves own goal gave East Fife hope but they crashed to a seventh successive loss in all competitions after Sutherland scored the winner 15 minutes from time for Montrose.

Luke Donnelly’s last-gasp strike helped Alloa to a 2-2 draw against Cove Rangers, who responded to Josh Gentles’ early goal by turning the tables with late strikes from Adam Emslie and Mitch Megginson only to be denied at the last.

Rock-bottom Kelty Hearts were held to a goalless draw by Hamilton.

Scottish League Two leaders Spartans came from a goal three times to draw 3-3 at Elgin.

Jack MacIver’s brace and Kane Hester put Elgin ahead but Spartans rallied each time through Marc McNulty’s penalty and goals from Bradley Whyte and Cameron Russell.

Jack Leitch, Cameron Elliott and Bobby McLuckie scored as East Kilbride moved to within six points of Spartans with a 3-1 win over Forfar, who pulled one back late on through Martin Rennie.

Bottom side Edinburgh are two points off safety after beating ninth-placed Dumbarton 2-1. Innes Lawson scored twice for the capital club after Leighton McIntosh had put Dumbarton ahead.

Darren Hynes cancelled out Aidan Smith’s early goal as third-placed Clyde drew 1-1 at Annan, while it was the same score between Stirling and Stranraer. Ryan Shanley put Stirling ahead but Deryn Lang equalised after the break.
