Danny Rohl has sights set on league and cup double for Rangers

Danny Rohl targeted a league and cup double after Bojan Miovski’s hat-trick helped a much-changed Rangers side to 5-0 Scottish Gas Scottish Cup win over Annan Athletic at Ibrox.

The North Macedonia striker fired the Gers into the lead in the 12th minute against the League Two outfit  and grabbed a second before the break.

Midfielder Kieran Dowell added a third early in the second half, Miovski grabbed his own third in the 74th minute with a penalty before substitute Thelo Aasgaard scored a terrific free-kick to seal a place in the next round.

Rangers are also bidding for the William Hill Premiership title and sit in third place, behind Celtic on goal difference and six points adrift of leaders Hearts.

The Gers boss said: “I think in general we can play for two titles at the moment, I think that’s what we want.

“In the cup you need less wins to be in the final, I think it’s a great opportunity, we want to push.

“I think we are hungry in the changing room at the moment. I think there was a big statement in Aberdeen (2-0 win) when I felt the dressing room  after the win was really fantastic.

“It showed me that there is something growing, there is a connection, there is a belief, there is a trust to each other, it’s really fantastic to see.”

Before the game Denmark winger Andreas Skov Olsen signed on loan from Wolfsburg until the end of the season with the Govan club having an option to buy.

The 26-year-old was paraded to the Gers fans before the match along with already-recruited 22-year-old Danish midfielder Tochi Chukwuani, who came off the bench later in the game, and Belgian left-back Tuur Rommens.

Rohl said: “I think in general it was a good week for us. We signed three players.

“He gives us experience, he gives us a different profile on the right side with the left foot, he can score.

“All in all I’m very happy, I’m proud of what we do at the moment, but we have to be on front foot, we cannot do less.

“We are hungry, all in all you feel it at the moment, and there is big confidence back.

“There is a pride back, but for this we have to work hard to continue like this in the next couple of weeks.”

Gers midfielder Lyall Cameron has joined Aberdeen on loan for the rest of the season and Rohl expects more to leave.

He said: “I think we have to look at what makes sense for the group, I think in the middle of February we have more normal weeks.

“In this case you have to look at what makes sense to give players opportunities in other places.

“For Lyall it’s a good opportunity to get minutes, for us it’s helpful as well. In this case we go forward.”

Annan player-manager Willie Gibson was left sore by the defeat.

He said: “We knew we were going to be up against it. I think for large parts of the game we did really well.

“It was just their quality told in the end. I was proud of the players.”
