Late Lewis Wing winner sees Reading past Stockport

A dramatic 89th-minute goal from midfielder Lewis Wing gave in-form Reading a 1-0 League One victory over play-off chasers Stockport County.

In a dour first half, County forward Malik Mothersille squandered the best two openings with wayward finishing on each occasion.

But the game improved after the break, with Wing lashing home late on to extend the Royals’ unbeaten run to five matches.

After a cagey and uneventful opening, Stockport created the first chance when Mothersille cut in from the right but he missed the target with a poor attempt on goal.

Mothersille’s radar was off again when he drove wide after a promising run and cross from Tayo Edun.

Reading’s response was mostly laboured but both sides showed more intent early in the second half.

Daniel Kyerewaa went close for the hosts and Royals goalkeeper Joel Pereira was forced into saves from Kyle Wootton and Jack Diamond.

Reading rallied towards the end, with County keeper Ben Hinchliffe making fine stops to deny Wing and Kyerewaa from close range.

But Hinchliffe could do nothing when the Stockport defence failed to clear and Wing hammered into the roof of the net for his ninth goal of the season.
