Kyreece Lisbie hit a first-half equaliser for Colchester as the points were shared in a 1-1 draw with Crawley at the Broadfield Stadium.
Reece Brown, with his first Crawley goal at home, gave the Red Devils the lead and the hosts could have snatched victory late on when Ryan Loft spurned a great chance.
Crawley began on the front foot and midfielder Brown gave them a deserved lead by drilling a low shot under goalkeeper Matt Macey in the 13th minute.
But the U’s hit back to level seven minutes later when keeper Harvey Davies parried a shot from Arthur Read and Lisbie blasted in the rebound off the post.
Colchester had more of the ball in the second half and Lisbie put a deflected shot over having worked an opening.
Crawley boss Scott Lindsey made four substitutions before the 70-minute mark in an effort to pep up his front line.
Striker Loft should have clinched the points for Crawley two minutes from time but shot wide after keeper Macey saved a shot from substitute Harry McKirdy.
Crawley are now unbeaten in their last six home league games going back to the end of September, while Colchester have lost only one of their last six away league outings.
