Pete Wild hoping to fend off any interest in Fleetwood striker Ryan Graydon

Pete Wild hopes there are no suitors for Ryan Graydon in January after his latest goal set Fleetwood on the way to a 2-1 Sky Bet League Two win over Gillingham.

Graydon fired the Cod Army level with his eighth goal of the season after Bradley Dack had given the visitors a 14th-minute lead.

Fleetwood were fortunate to be only one down at the break. But after Graydon’s 53rd-minute leveller they enjoyed the better chances.

And while Ched Evans was denied a potential winner by Jake Turner’s penalty save, Evans then turned provider for substitute Zech Medley to claim an 85th-minute winner.

“He is a good footballer and there will obviously be people wanting him,” said boss Wild of striker Graydon.

“But I go back to the summer when there was all this speculation but we only had one small bid in the whole of the window.

“I want to keep him. He is a massive part of what we do here.

“I think we can get him into the late teens or early 20’s (in goals) if he stays here. Then he decides what he does in the summer.

“But I am talking from a football perspective not a business perspective,” said Wild after Town moved up to ninth.

On his team’s performance, Wild said: “Gillingham were controlling the whole match (in the first half), using the dark arts.

“I just felt we bowed down to that. At half-time I said we had to match their intensity and aggression and if we did that we would give ourselves a chance.”

Gillingham boss Gareth Ainsworth said: “We had to defend better second half. We lost too many battles.

“We had enough chances in the first half to go two or three up. But if you miss your chances, you are prone to getting punished.

“And Fleetwood punished us second half. They were relentless in what they were doing.

“Bradley hit the post in the second half but really we weren’t threatening,” added Ainsworth after Gills were denied a sixth successive draw.

“We have got to realise we are in a tough place, get out of it with two must-win home games. Six points will make a huge difference to where we are.”

Ainsworth believed Gills should have had a first-half penalty for goalkeeper Jay Lynch’s challenge on Sam Dale.

But just as crucial was a miss by Seb Palmer-Houlden which could have doubled the Kent team’s lead.

“Sam was punched in the face and heaven knows why we didn’t get a penalty. That could have put the game further from their grip,” Ainsworth said.
