Stenhousemuir beat League One leaders Inverness in top-of-the-table tussle

Stenhousemuir came out on top of the big game at the top of Scottish League One to close the gap to leaders Inverness.

Caley Thistle began the day with a five-point lead but that has now been reduced to three, with Stenhousemuir moving into second place thanks to a 1-0 victory.

The only goal came in the 65th minute from Olly Whyte, who converted Matty Aitken’s pinpoint cross, and the hosts held on after having Leyton Grant sent off with six minutes left.

Stenhousemuir climbed above Alloa, who fell to a 1-0 defeat against struggling Hamilton.

Scott Robinson netted the only goal in the 25th minute to move Hamilton five points clear of bottom side Kelty Hearts.

Kelty led at half-time in the battle of the bottom two against Cove Rangers but the visitors hit back impressively to claim a 5-2 victory and open up a four-point gap.

Adam Emslie gave Rangers the lead in the eighth minute but Thomas O’Ware equalised and Ricco Diack put Kelty ahead in the 32nd minute.

The away side were back on level terms through Michael Doyle in the 67th minute, and from there ran away with the game as Mitch Megginson scored twice and Lewis O’Donnell once to clinch the points.

Michael Hewitt’s 48th-minute goal earned Queen of the South a 1-0 win over Montrose to move them level on points with Alloa, while Peterhead are two points further back after beating East Fife by the same scoreline, Jason Brown with the goal in the 38th minute.

There are new leaders of Scottish League Two after victory for Spartans and defeat for East Kilbride.

The pair had begun the day level on points but Spartans now have a three-point advantage after Ayrton Sonkur’s 67th-minute goal earned them a 1-0 win over Elgin City.

East Kilbride, meanwhile, were beaten 3-1 at home by Annan Athletic and had Lewis Spence sent off for two yellow cards late on.

Connor Young had put the hosts ahead in the 10th minute but Annan player-manager Wullie Gibson equalised six minutes later, Josh Dixon scored just before half-time and Zander Craik made sure of the points in injury time.

Third-placed Clyde were also beaten, going down 2-1 at home to lowly Stirling Albion.

Corey Thompson opened the scoring in the 23rd minute and Russell McLean netted Stirling’s second from the penalty spot in the 78th minute. James Hilton pulled one back, also from the spot, in injury time but the visitors held on.

Bottom side Edinburgh City edged an entertaining 3-2 victory over Forfar.

Mark Whatley cancelled out Jack Duncan’s opener for Edinburgh within a minute but Greig Allen and James Stokes put the visitors 3-1 up and Forfar could not find an equaliser after Jake Sutherland pulled one back with 15 minutes left.

Fourth-placed Stranraer were pegged back in injury time by Dumbarton, with Kai Kirkpatrick clinching a 1-1 draw.
