Manager Nathan Jones urged Charlton’s supporters to give Tyreece Campbell a break after his second-half equaliser earned a 1-1 draw at Birmingham.
The forward fired a 67th-minute leveller to stop a run of five straight Championship defeats for the Addicks after Christoph Klarer’s opener for Blues.
Jones wanted perspective after the final whistle as they prevented Chris Davies’ side from chalking up their fifth successive home win.
He said: “We’ve had to play Tyreece everywhere.
“We’ve played him at right wing-back, left wing-back – the kid’s an attacking player, an out-and-out attacking player.
“We’ve asked him to do so many things – and he’s a great kid – people getting on his back, there’s no context.
“Our fans shouldn’t because of what he’s done for them and he was special for us last year.
“He transforms us. He’s a threat – and people fear him.”
Jones admits Charlton have been ‘missing six big players’ through injury and added: “This should set us up in the coming weeks so that we can get on an even keel because we’ve had a really difficult run of fixtures.
“So it feels like that’s changed. It feels like the wind has changed a bit.
“If we get one or two back in the coming weeks, we are going to be a different animal.”
Birmingham, attempting to get back to winning ways following successive defeats on their travels at Southampton and QPR, dominated the opening half, posting 17 shots on the visitors’ goal.
They only had Klarer’s header to show for their efforts, the home skipper nodding in Tommy Doyle’s right-wing free-kick.
But Charlton should have drawn level five minutes later when Miles Leaburn fired over with the goal at his mercy following a mistake by home goalkeeper Ryan Allsop.
They enjoyed a let-off when Demarai Gray hit a low drive against the foot of the upright.
The Jamaica international almost scored a superb solo second but the ball cannoned against the crossbar and away to safety.
Charlton rallied after the interval but retreated after the equaliser as Brum laid siege to the visitors’ goal.
But it was not to be, although Davies was not unhappy with the effort.
He said: “We got off to a good start – I was really happy with the first half.
“But I do think our football could have been better in the first 15-20 minutes of the second.
“You can always anticipate the away team having a spell of momentum in a game and it was a sloppy goal from our point of view.
“But there was no lack of effort – we kept going until the very end.”
