Fleetwood beat Luton on penalties to reach FA Cup third round

Fleetwood got the better of League One visitors Luton to reach the third round of the FA Cup with a 4-2 win on penalties after playing out a 2-2 draw.

Ethan Ennis had set the League Two hosts on course for victory after 65 minutes but Jerry Yates’ tap-in levelled matters shortly after.

Ennis hit a glorious second with the outside of his boot – eight minutes from time – but Teden Mengi struck in stoppage-time to make it 2-2.

A goalless first half had seen Luton’s Lasse Nordas closed down after rounding the goalkeeper, while Zack Nelson fired over and Nordas was denied by a save from David Harrington.

At the other end, Fleetwood’s Mark Helm, Ryan Graydon and Ched Evans could not find the net with their chances.

Luton started the second half strongly but Millenic Alli failed to finish on two occasions.

The away side fell behind when a long crossfield ball fell for Ennis and he buried a neat finish.

The lead did not last long though before Gideon Kodua set up Yates for a simple finish.

Luton’s Mads Andersen and the hosts’ Will Davies both headed chances over before Ennis’ moment of inspiration arrived.

Mengi rescued Luton with a thunderbolt from outside the box to send the tie to extra-time.

With no goals in extra-time, the tie went to spot-kicks. Jacob Brown and Liam Walsh missed their penalties for Luton, while Fleetwood were clinical, earning their place in round three.
