Gardai arrest man, 30s, over anti-social behaviour on bus in Limerick

A MAN HAS been arrested in Limerick city in connection with anti-social behaviour on an inter-county Bus Eireann route.

A garda spokesperson confirmed officers responded to a public order incident on Childers Road.

“A man, aged in his 30s, was arrested in relation to this incident and has since been charged.

“He is due to appear before a sitting of the Limerick Criminal Courts of Justice at a later date,” said a garda spokesperson.

 A spokesperson for Bus Éireann confirmed an anti-social behaviour incident occurred on Expressway Route 13  (Limerick-Tralee). 

It occurred at around 4pm on November 11. 

“This incident has been referred to An Garda Síochána who attended the scene, and Bus Éireann are providing assistance as required, including making CCTV available to gardaí,” said a  spokesperson.

Bus Éireann does not tolerate anti-social behaviour towards our customers or staff, said the spokesperson.  The exact nature of what occurred is not known.

“As this matter is currently subject to a gardaí investigation, we are not in a position to provide any additional information on this specific incident,” said the spokesperson, who concluded by saying the “safety of our passengers and staff is of paramount importance to Bus Éireann”.

In June, SIPTU  wrote to Bus Éireann management over  what the union described as increasing incidents of anti-social behaviour on one of its Limerick services - Route 303. 

SIPTU said members have reported windows on buses being broken by youths throwing stones, workers being subjected to verbal abuse and threats of violence.

Last January, the Leader revealed that private  security drivers started to escort evening bus services in a city estate to protect drivers and passengers from serious violence.
