Neil Harris ‘delighted’ as Cambridge end their three-month wait for an away win

Cambridge boss Neil Harris was thrilled as his side won 2-0 at Barrow, their first away win since August.

Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu scored twice for the visitors as they moved to within a point of the play-offs in Sky Bet League Two.

Harris said: “I’m delighted, delighted for the players, delighted for the staff, delighted for the fans.

“It wasn’t our finest away performance, if I’ve got to be honest, some moments of real control, quality moments for the goals.

“Then there was a couple of moments when we nearly threw a goal away, which is very unlike us.

“We got over the line. What a good goal that first goal was, when you get your noses in front and invite pressure on to you, it gives you the opportunity to go on the counter-attack, to go and hurt teams on the transition.

“The second goal was a real beautiful moment for us to take the pressure off, ultimately it was a professional performance, five clean sheets in a row which is key as this is a tough place to come in any moment in the season.”

Mpanzu came up with the two goals and Harris was pleased to see goals coming from midfield, adding: “It’s key to get goals from all over the pitch.

“When we play the shape that we did today, it gives Pelly the chance to move forward, which he wants at times and they’re two really good goals in their own right.”

Meanwhile, Barrow boss Andy Whing was frustrated as his side’s winless run extended to a fourth game.

He said: “It was very disappointing, I thought we did well first half, I thought there was a massive improvement from last week.

“We kept the ball better, I said at half-time we’re too much of a one half team at the moment and we needed to come out second half exactly the same and we just didn’t.

“We switched off, got our press wrong and conceded a goal. The first goal is important and we struggle when we don’t get it and we ended up chasing the game.

“We just don’t look threatening enough in the final third unfortunately. We got into really good areas, put a lot of crosses into the box. We just don’t test the goalkeeper enough.”

Whing is now turning his attention to the crucial clash at bottom side Newport next week.

He explained: “When you lose games of football, its always a big week because you’re desperate to go and win a game of football.

“Sometimes when you’re in these little ruts you can’t see the wood through the trees but there’s a lot of positives.”
