Stuart Maynard says York ‘could have scored six’ in FA Cup near miss

York manager Stuart Maynard hailed his side’s performance as they just fell short of causing an upset at League One Barnsley.

Josh Stones opened the scoring for York before Davis Keillor-Dunn’s brace put Barnsley 2-1 in front in the 77th minute.

Mark Kitching levelled the game for York two minutes from time but centre-back Marc Roberts won the game in the first minute of added time and put the League One side through to the second round of the FA Cup.

Maynard said he was proud of his team despite the result – and thought they could have ‘scored six’ had it not been for Murphy Cooper in the Barnsley goal.

He said: “I thought we played really well and on another day I think we win it.

“Our fans are absolutely incredible. It felt once again like a home game.

“I think the performance from start to finish was incredible. I think on another day, we probably could have scored six goals.

“If you come away from that game, you probably wouldn’t be able to tell who the League One side was and who the National League team was.”

Barnsley head coach Conor Hourihane said it was ‘nice to win’ and be in the hat for the second round.

He said: “Credit to York, I thought they were outstanding.

“I’ve played in plenty of these games and it’s really difficult when your fans turn up and expect to win 4-0.

“It’s not easy so the lads showed real character to get themselves back into the game after a slow start. You’ve just got to get the job done and luckily enough for us we did.”
