Lee Bonis penalty helps Chesterfield beat Stevenage to reach FA Cup second round

Chesterfield dumped high-flying Stevenage out of the FA Cup and deservedly so after winning 1-0 at the Lamex.

A Lee Bonis penalty in the 61st minute was enough to give the Sky Bet League Two club victory against a home team sitting fourth in the division above.

It came after a horrendous pass from Dan Sweeney was played straight to the impressive Dilan Markanday, who raced into the box before being tripped by Carl Piergianni.

Bonis easily sent Filip Marschall the wrong way from the spot.

The visitors almost had a second later on, only for a good save by the Stevenage goalkeeper to deny Markanday.

While the late pressure that came from the hosts saw a shot deflected on to the crossbar by Chesterfield’s Chey Dunkley, an equaliser did not look like coming.

Stevenage claimed for two penalties of their own in the first period but only got two bookings instead, Jamie Reid for complaining when Phoenix Patterson went down and then Jasper Pattenden seeing yellow for diving.

Bonis did have the ball in the net but the offside flag ruled that out.

It had been a lacklustre performance from the Boro though, and the Spireites deserved their victory.
