Andy Crosby says there is ‘more to come’ from Tranmere after draw at Accrington

Boss Andy Crosby feels there is more to come from Tranmere after they extended their unbeaten run to three League Two games with a 1-1 draw at Accrington.

Rovers were trailing to Shaun Whalley’s goal after the winger marked his first appearance of the season by firing home in the 16th minute.

However, Charlie Whitaker levelled after 63 minutes with a superb goal from the edge of the area before, a minute later, Tranmere goalkeeper Joe Murphy saved Paddy Madden’s penalty and headed follow-up.

The point means 17th-placed Rovers keep a three-point gap over Stanley in 21st.

Crosby said: “The overall feeling is disappointment. I am disappointed with certain aspects of the game. We need to play with more composure and more intelligence.

“We gifted them a goal and then we scored a really good goal. Charlie’s was a brilliant finish and he is now off the mark in terms of league goals. That was one of the few times we showed real composure.

“Then it felt like seconds before the penalty but massive credit to Joe for making the first save and then being agile enough to get up and make a double save.

“That’s three games where we have picked up points, it has kept the momentum going, but there is much more to come from us.

“We have got to look at ourselves at where we can get better.

“We have had a large amount of players injured in September and October and that hasn’t helped us but they are coming back and that will boost the squad and the competition in the squad and I will have more options.”

Accrington manager John Doolan was happy to have Whalley back on the pitch, with the 38-year-old having sustained an injury in pre-season.

Doolan said: “It’s an opportunity missed. The first-half performance was very good. It’s great to have Shaun back and he scored a quality goal.

“Shaun is unbelievable, he has been out a long time and we have to manage him. He has that quality in the final third and it was there for all to see.

“They were always going to get better in the second half and they turned it into a bit of a battle but I thought we weathered the storm.

“However, they scored and then we got the opportunity of the penalty. You want one of the strikers to take it, Paddy stepped up and I will never knock anyone for taking a penalty but the rest is history.

“We should have taken more out of the game. I have said in the dressing room, it will turn for us.”
