Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson was not impressed by his side despite Archie Collins’ stunning strike earning a much-needed 1-0 win over fellow League One strugglers Burton.
Posh won just their third league game of the campaign despite playing the last nine minutes plus stoppage time with 10 men after Tom Lees was shown a second yellow card for a poor challenge on Burton’s Charlie Webster.
Collins struck with a fine effort from the edge of the area in the 65th minute, but it was the only part of the contest that pleased Ferguson.
“Archie’s goal is the one moment of quality in the game,” the Posh manager said.
“It’s a good result. Always the most important thing and we got a clean sheet.
“We defended well and dealt with what they threw at us, but first half on the ball we were appalling. As bad as I’ve seen us. We had to improve in the second half. The players knew that.
“That was nowhere near a good enough performance, but we have managed to scrape out a win.
“The result is the most important thing for everyone but that doesn’t camouflage the performance.
“I’m scratching my head at that one. The work we have done on the training ground, and we’ve had a good bit of time to prepare, I didn’t see it.
“Whether they are a lot lower in confidence than I thought, I just don’t know. But being brutally honest, I am not watching that.
“The players are not stupid, at least I don’t think they are. They know that sort or performance will land us in trouble if we get that every week.”
Burton boss Gary Bowyer was equally frustrated as his side failed to build on their comprehensive 3-0 win over Bolton last time out.
“When you have that much dominance in the first half you have to score, and we haven’t done enough,” Bowyer said.
“We didn’t make the goalkeeper work enough throughout the whole game, but I have been in the game long enough to know what to expect in the second half.”
Bowyer contested that Posh’s winner should have been chalked off, claiming Kyrell Lisbie was offside as Jack Armer headed cleared before Collins emphatically fired home.
Bowyer said: “Second half we stopped doing the things we did first and there is nothing in the game.
“And then you concede to a wonder goal. A wonder goal that is offside.
“Jack Armer has to head the ball because the lad behind him is offside.
“He doesn’t know that but the lad is interfering with play. He must be. It’s incredible it’s allowed to stand.”
