Bolton boss Steven Schumacher thrilled to claim derby honours against Wigan

Boss Steven Schumacher revelled in the end of Bolton’s home hoodoo against derby rivals Wigan but revealed he wasn’t “arsed” by one particular result.

A Marcus Forss double on his full Trotters home league debut plus other strikes from Thierry Gale and Mason Burstow gave Schumacher and Wanderers bragging rights over Latics and managerial pal Ryan Lowe.

Bolton’s impressive success in front of 25,565 fans ended a run of four games without a win against Latics at the Toughsheet Stadium, including back-to-back 4-0 defeats, stretching back more than 11 years.

“To win a game is important and to do it against a local rival in a fixture where we haven’t had a lot of recent success is probably the most pleasing thing,” said Schumacher.

“We won away from home last time against them so stopping these records is the best thing about it.

“It was only four games but the stigma is there. Their fans are holding on to that so I am glad it has ended.

“But you can never relax because goals can change games. You can only relax when the referee blows the final whistle.”

Bolton’s performance even masked any disappointment felt by Everton fan Schumacher at the outcome of the Merseyside derby, which Liverpool won 2-1.

“I asked my dad on the way off how we got on,” he said. “I can’t say I am too surprised but I wasn’t arsed if I am honest. I just wanted us to win. That was the most important thing.”

Liverpool fan Lowe would certainly have swapped the Premier League leaders’ win over Everton for three points against Wigan’s neighbours.

“It was tough,” admitted Lowe. “To gift a good team those type of goals is disappointing.

“All those goals were avoidable but they were clinical in everything they did. We didn’t get anywhere near them.

“You look at the scoreline but I don’t think we got ripped open many times. It was more desire from them to go and get the goals from our silly mistakes.

“The alarm bells were there early on. We gave them too much space and they have good players and can hurt you.

“It was one of those games where you have to give credit where credit is due. Congratulations to them but we can do better.

“It proved there is still a lot of work to do. We are a good team with a good set of lads but we are not a very good team yet.

“The quicker we become a very good team that’s when you come here and don’t get beat 4-1.”
