Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson believes his side’s first win of the season is not far away despite a 3-2 defeat at Huddersfield that leaves them with just one point from their first seven games.
The Posh struck first through Jimmy-Jay Morgan early in a lively second-half, but by the time Cian Hayes got their second in injury time it was mere consolation, with Will Alves, Herbie Kane and Joe Taylor having given Huddersfield a 3-1 lead.
A defiant Ferguson said: “I’ve been in this game long enough to know you have good moments in your career and bad moments, and we’re going through a bad time.
“I think I’ve had three promotions in eight seasons from League One and I’ve nothing to prove at this level. In every one of those promotions we’ve had a bad run but then been able to get past it.
“We can’t keep losing much longer, but the reality of it is it’s a brand new team and we’re rebuilding the team. Of course within that you can’t keep losing games, I know that, I’m not stupid, but I think the fans have seen a more positive performance in this game.
“I feel I’ve got good trust and good belief in my personnel. We’ve got some injuries, but I don’t think we’re far away.
“I have to use all my experience and the reality of it is you have to find ways to win games or you’re going to come under scrutiny. I take that on my shoulders, it’s part of being a manager.”
Huddersfield boss Lee Grant said: “It’s a good three points and it’s really important. We came into the week with a clear target of two wins, and I’m so proud of the group that they’ve been able to do that.
“The big caveat is I want the group to be better. I asked what they felt at half time and the answer was pretty clear that they feel they have a way to go yet.
“Some of them are even thinking already how disappointed they are with their own performances, which isn’t what I was after, but there’s a real humility in the group and a real desire to keep improving.
“I think they were surprised by their own lack of energy and we need to look at that and discover where it came from. It’s a number of things we can recognise already and others we’ll discover when we watch it back.
“I think some of the information I gave to the group before the game didn’t really help them either, which I put right at half time, so I need to hold my hands up on that as well.”
