Sonia Bompastor revealed that Sam Kerr is in the Chelsea squad for their Women’s Super League opener against Manchester City.
The Australia striker has been sidelined since picking up an ACL injury in January 2024, and 20 months later Bompastor has confirmed Kerr’s availability for Friday’s game.
“Sam Kerr is in the squad, she will be involved in the game. We don’t know yet if she will start or not, but she’s in the squad,” Bompastor said.
“She’s in a good place, she’s been training well. She’s physically in a good position, she’s also mentally in a good position.
“It’s nice because I think she’s one of the players everyone wants to see her on the pitch. That’s nice for me also to have her in the squad with her leadership and experience.
“But in the same time, to be fair to her, she’s been away from the pitch for a long time, so I think we need to still be patient with her.
“That’s normal for her not to be at the best level yet, but hopefully soon. That’s already a good step for us and for her to be in the squad.”

Chelsea begin their WSL title defence at Stamford Bridge with a clash against City, who start the season under new head coach Andree Jeglertz following his appointment in July.
Bompastor will be without England duo Lucy Bronze and Lauren James as they continue their recovery from injuries, while Mayra Ramirez is also sidelined.
