Relegated Shrewsbury beaten by Wigan

Shrewsbury lost 1-0 to Wigan after their League One relegation was confirmed earlier in the day.

Burton’s draw at Exeter sealed the Shrews’ fate and Dale Taylor’s winner at the Croud Meadow rubbed salt into their wounds.

The visitors had the first big chance when Jon Mellish’s strike was saved by Jamal Blackman.

The dangerous Mellish almost broke the deadlock when he rattled the outside of the post.

George Nurse tested Wigan keeper Sam Tickle with a free-kick on the stroke of the break.

Taylor, who had a goal ruled out for offside in first-half stoppage-time, grabbed the winner 19 minutes from time as he stroked home from Maleace Asamoah’s pass after he drove into the box.

Tickle produced a good save in the final 10 minutes to keep Callum Stewart out from an acute angle.

Mal Benning, who nodded over late on, could only fire straight at Tickle right at the end as the Latics held on for their first win under manager Ryan Lowe.
