WITH the energia All-Ireland League taking a break, the Bateman Cup takes centre stage this weekend with Garryowen hosting Instonians in a semi-final at Doradoyle on Saturday, 1.30pm.

The ‘Light Blues’ won the Bank of Ireland Munster Senior Cup against Cork Constitution back in March to secure their place in the Bateman Cup this weekend.

Garryowen's Munster Cup victory was the club's 40th time to lift the trophy, following a 22-7 win over the Cork side in Thomond Park.

Their opponents on Saturday, Instonians, defeated Queen's University, in the Ulster Senior Cup final, 36-26, to book their spot in the Bateman Cup.

Garryowen will be favourites to win this weekend given their higher status in the All-Ireland League. However, the Dooradoyle based team currently sit at the bottom of the 1A table with just one win from their seven AIL games, while Instonians are sitting second of the Division 2A. The opening Bateman Cup semi-final on Friday sees Lansdowne host Sligo.

Meanwhile, there are three group fixtures involving Limerick sides in the Bank of Ireland Munster Challenge Cup this weekend.

On Friday night, Shannon renew rivalry with Nenagh Ormond at Coonagh, 8pm, for the second time in six days in Group 1 while on Saturday, Bruff make the trip to County Tipperary to face Cashel in Group 3, 2.30pm, while at the same time UL-Bohemian will host Clonmel RFC at Annacotty in Group 3.
