Limerick sprint hurdler Sarah Lavin
LIMERICK sprint hurdler Sarah Lavin has missed out on a place in the final of the women's 100m hurdles at the Paris Olympics.
Thirty-year-old Lavin, from Lisnagry, finished in sixth place in her semi-final in a time of 12.69 at the Stade de France on Friday morning.
Double Olympian Lavin, who was a flagbearer for Ireland at the Olympics opening ceremony, ran just 0.07 outside the PB she set at last year's World Championships in Budapest.
The ultra-consistent Lisnagry woman was ranked 15th overall with USA's Alaysha Johnson clockest the fastest time in the semi-finals 12.34.
Lavin had stormed to a second-place finish in her first round heat on Wednesday morning, clocking 12.73 to advance to Friday morning's semi-finals. The Limerick woman is the Irish record holder for the women's 100m hurdles with a time of 12.62.
Afterwards Lavin, of Emerald AC, who is coached by Noelle Morrissey, was extremely grateful for the large Ireland support cheering her on in the Stade de France.
The Limerick woman told RTÉ Sport: "I hit number eight in a really good position, but hurdles you have to be precise, I was just a fraction too tough.
"It was going to be the best race I could have put out today up until the eighth hurdle, gutting to do that, it's a mistake.
"I have to be immensely proud... just today I'm not good enough " Sarah Lavin felt the eighth hurdle was costly in her 110m semi-final

"I knew I had to run .55 to get an auto-Q (automatic qualification), but I wasn’t inside the top two. Today I’m not good enough."
Speaking about the support in the stands, Lavin said: "It's so beautiful and I can’t thank people enough.
"To come into this stadium like this and have such a large roar behind you is incredible. I would have loved to make them proud today, but that’s sport and it is just sport."
