MUNSTER action takes the limelight this weekend with eight Limerick teams in action attempting to reach the last eight of their respective competitions.
In the Munster Junior Cup, Aisling Annacotty A travel to the mighty St Michaels AFC while Mungret Regional are also on the road away to Avenue Utd in Ennis.
Aisling won this competition a couple of seasons back and got the taste for success. They have a fine squad of players but they meet a Saints side steeped in success and the Limerick side will need a huge performance (which they are capable of) to see them off.
Mungret’s superb win over Newmarket in the last round them earned them another tilt with Clare opposition in Avenue.
The hosts lead the way in the Clare Premier League and they have one Steven McGann in their ranks, a reacquaintance Mungret would have avoided gladly.
That said Mungret showed against the FAI Champions, that they are a match for the best on their day so should go into the tie with belief.
The inaugural Munster Shield is proving hugely popular with the clubs outside the top two division and the top game on Sunday is the all-Limerick clash of Herbertstown and Aisling Annacotty D in Herbertstown.
The visitors will carry the favourites tag as they lead the way in Division 1B and while the home side might be playing in a division lower, they have a seriously good team, well capable of pitching their efforts at a higher level. This promises to be a cracking cup tie.
Pike Rovers host Cork side Avondale Utd while Cappamore travel to Ennis to meet Fair Green Celtic.
Ringmahon Rangers is the location for Regional Utd B on Sunday afternoon while Balla B are also on the road in Cork to take on Powerstown.
There are three games scheduled in the Premier League. With three games in hand on leaders Aisling and just three points adrift, Pike Rvs will be looking to go joint tops with a couple of games to spare.
In their way are Fairview Rgs, not an easy task at any time but even more so when these two clash. With a 7pm kick off on Saturday evening a big crowd is guaranteed in the Fairgreen.
On Sunday, Regional Utd also have the opportunity to go joint top when they visit Newport.
Coonagh Utd, fresh from a victory that took them off the foot of the table, will be hoping to build on that result when they host Geraldines.
In the Premier A League Aisling and Kilmallock have the chance to join Janesboro in top spot when they meet each other.
Lurking a point behind are Hyde Rgs A who welcome neighbours Summerville Rvs.
Southend, joint leaders in Div 1A, take on Ballylanders who are just a point behind.
A draw in this game and Star Rvs to win at home to Granville Rgs would see the St Mary’s Park side take on the top spot.
In Division 1B, Corbally Utd B can go top with a win over Wembley Rvs while Mungret can retain their challenge if they can beat Parkville.
Shelbourne can increase their lead in Div 2A when they host Hyde Rgs B while Croom Utd will be right back in the mix if they can beat Mungret Reg C.
