Claire O’Riordan from Newcastle West has set the soccer world alight after being picked on the squad for the Women’s World Cup. She has now signed with Belgian side Standard Liège.

How did you get into your chosen sport ?

Sport has always been and always will be a big factor in my family's life. From a young age my cousins, sister and I were often sent off to training sessions of different codes. Camogie and hurling was always massive on both of my parents' sides. Having grown up playing camogie, ladies Gaelic football and basketball, football was my last sport to take up as a kid. I always enjoyed playing with a ball at my feet. I got my first taste of football playing with my mates on the streets just for fun. The World Cup was a common game played . When I was in primary school in Scoil Iosaf I got the opportunity to play in the school team, and I loved it so much I decided to join a local boys team, Newcastle West Rovers at the time.

Who was your sporting hero growing up and your sporting hero now?

When I was younger my dad would often take me to some of the Limerick hurling matches and even watching some of the games on TV I often found myself paying extra close attention to Timmy Houlihan, Limerick goalkeeper, a position of which I played in camogie so I found it fitting to see and learn from a county player. As I have gotten older and more exposed to female athletes, I am in awe of the hard work, dedication and discipline Katie Taylor gives to her boxing, topped off with an amazing career to date.

Normal day before game/event

Once I am fed and watered with a morning cup of coffee and the chance to chill, I am happy out and ready to go for game day.

What is the most memorable moment in your career so far?

Qualifying for the World Cup is an unbeatable occasion to surpass.

What would you change in your sport today to help women ?

More opportunities, giving every young girl the opportunity to play football.

What is an important lesson you have learnt in your sport?

Patience is a virtue!

What is the best advice you would give to someone?

Be happy, find enjoyment through your passion, even through the tough times. Happiness can be so important to the growth and development of a player at any age.
