Limerick Athletics - Weekly News Update

The 14th Regeneron Great Limerick Run took place on Sunday last with more than 13,000 entrants participating across four event distances | PICTURE: Keith Wiseman

THE main event this weekend was the Regeneron Great Limerick Run which took place on Sunday.

Marathon

Cloniffe Harrier athlete Tudor Mircea who led from the gun won the marathon. His clubmate Yuliya Tarasova was the first woman home.

Notable Limerick performances came from Liam Lynch, Limerick AC, Brendan Costello of West Limerick, Michael Lynch, also of Limerick AC, and Cian Aherne, of Dooneen, who all ran under three hours.

Also running for Dooneen and putting in strong performances were Karen Raine, Eadoin Hennessy, Ronan McAvinue and David Rohan. George O’Sullivan, Martin Liston, James Dalton, Padraig O’Donnell and Derek Mackessy all represented West Limerick AC in the marathon. Thomas Shanahan and Declan Forde ran for Limerick AC.

An Brú was represented by Anne Marie O’Connor, Tom Meaney and Breda Bridges. Special mention to Derek Mackessy who has completed his 350th marathon.

Half-Marathon

William Maunsell, of Clonmel AC, won the half marathon and local rowing Olympian Sinead Lynch was the first woman home.

From Limerick clubs, there were strong performances by Dooneen AC runners Niall Harris, Shane Ryan, Patrick O’Regan, Clare Coleman, Joe Chawke, Niall Bennis and Emer O’Mahony.

Gerry Prendergast, of An Brú, also ran a solid half marathon as did An Brú woman Eilis Hennessy, Patricia Wade, Una Power and Helen Meany.

Also running strongly on the day from Country Club was Yvonne Deegan. James Costello, Gerard Hannon, Mrk Ryan, Norman Paddle and Trish Collins all competed the half marathon for West Limerick AC.

Six-Mile

The six-mile race featured two Limerick athletes in third and fourth – Declan Moore and John Kinsella. Shona Heaslip, of An Ríocht. Ger Ryan, Brian Lynn, Alan Rice, Lousie Matthews and Sophia Meaney all ran impressively for Dooneen. Also putting in a fine performance was Katarzyna Bobka, of An Brú.

Sam Logan, Susan Murnane and Lorcan Murphy ran strongly representing Limerick AC. Karol Downey, Eamon Moran, Shane Quille and Timmy O’Carroll, all West Limerick AC.

Belfast Marathon 

The Belfast Marathon also took place this weekend. Special mention to Niall O’Riordan, of An Brú, who completed the race in a time of 2 hours 44 mins.

Also finishing in this time was Mark Lenihan of West Limerick AC. Also competing for West Limerick was Martin Lyons, Kieran Carr, Kevin Kelly, Noel Fitzgerald and Robert Maharg.
