Castletroy College have bowed out of the Pinergy Munster Schools Senior Cup
CASTLETROY College suffered an agonising one point, 14-13, defeat to Bandon Grammar School in their Pinergy Munster Schools Senior Cup first round game played at Musgrave Park on Wednesday.
Out-half Robert McConkey kicked Castletroy College into an early lead, before his opposite number, Peter Symington, of Bandon Grammar School, levelled the game at 3-3.
The Limerick side then hit the front, earning excellent field position with a clever move off a line-out. Back row Aran Cregan then charged his way over the tryline to help Castletroy into an 8-3 lead.
Bandon hit back just before half-time with a second penalty from Symington to leave just two points between the sides at the break, 8-6.
The West Cork side then hit the front after the resumption when Liam Prior struck for their opening try of the game to help Bandon into an 11-8 lead.
The see-saw nature of the game continued, however, when with just over five minutes remaining flanker Usman Musa broke through a number of tackles before touching down for Castletroy's second try and an 13-11 lead.
The decisive score of the game arrived with time running out as Symington converted a penalty to secure a dramatic victory for Bandon Grammar School.
Bandon's reward for their narrow victory is a second round meeting with holders Crescent College Comprehensive.
