The eight teams who competed this year are University College Dublin, Dublin City University, University College Cork, Queen’s University Belfast, University of Galway, Trinity College Dublin, defending champions Maynooth University, and hosts University of Limerick.

UL earned their place in the final four via a penalty shoot-out win in the quarter-final against UCD. A late call from the match officials saw the game moved from grass to astroturf resulting in a delayed kick-off.

Limerick midfielder Isaac O'Sullivan gave UL the lead in the 12th minute but the Dublin-based college returned the favour in the 57th minute when Mickey McCullagh was on hand to finish off a well worked team move.

With the sides level at the end of normal time penalty kicks would decide who would progress and it was the host college who held their nerve.

UL faced Queens University Belfast in the semi-final in what was a cagey affair.

The deadlock was eventually broken just before half-time when Matt Jones produced a wonderful cross via a corner for Conor Carew to head home for the hosts.

The Ulstermen’s task became much harder when two yellow cards in quick succession for Luke Wilson saw them reduced to ten men with over half an hour left to play.

Harry Sherlock was dismissed for UL in the sixty seventh minute which now meant that both sides would finish the game with ten players.

As the time ticked on, Queens continued to pump bodies forward and produced one final chance, a dangerous ball was cutback across the face of goal, but it evaded its target allowing UL to release the pressure.

UL will now look to exact revenge on Maynooth who defeated Limerick in the semi-finals last year on route to the title. The final will be played at Jackman Park in Limerick on Wednesday afternoon at 2:15pm.
