FAI Schools U14 First Year ‘B’ Boys National Cup:
Hazelwood College 2 Pobalscoil Ghaoth Dobhair 0
LIMERICK'S Hazelwood College, Dromcollogher produced a very confident display to claim the prestigious FAI Schools First Year ‘B’ Boys National Cup title on Wednesday last in an exciting decider played at the home of Longford town FC.
Munster champions Hazelwood secured the title with an impressive 2-0 victory over Pobalscoil Ghaoth Dobhair, of Donegal.
Cheered on by an enthusiastic bunch of supporters, the Hazelwood boys always looked favourites to bring this soccer title back to Limerick.
Hazelwood settled quickly into the match and were unlucky not to take the lead when a shot from Micheal O’Kelly struck the post as early as the fifth minute. Gary Murphy was also close with a good strike midway through the half.
The pressure against the Donegal side eventually led to the opening goal. Micheal O’Kelly got on the end of yet another rebound and struck a thunderous shot off the underside the crossbar. The linesman was in the best position to call the ball had crossed the line.
The Munster champions had a priceless 1-0 lead! Ghaoth Dobhair did threaten to equalise before half-time. Their highly talented central midfielder was particularly dangerous from set pieces.
However, Hazelwood's Tiernan O’Flynn also looked likely to extend the lead at the other end of the pitch. Good defending and goalkeeping meant the half-time scoreline read 1-0.
The second half was a very competitive affair with Hazelwood just shading it in terms of the quality of goalscoring chances created.
Conor McGarry, Johnny Power and Tiernan O’Flynn all had opportunities to add to the scoring. O'Flynn's tireless work was eventually rewarded when he was brought down in the penalty area with three minutes of normal time remaining.
He dispatched the resulting penalty with supreme confidence to put his side 2-0 ahead and ultimately help seal the victory on the day.
The clean sheet was due reward for the impressive efforts of Conor Lynch in goals and Brendan Meehan and Darragh Aspinall in the centre of the defence.
The full-backs, Marko Boyle and Geoffrey Taylor did most of their impressive work on the attack. Muiris McCarthy had the difficult holding midfielder role against quality opposition. He worked hard at this selfless task, allowing other midfielders free to play a more attacking role.
