Mayor John Moran has been pushing to have council meetings available for download after the event
A BID to have full council meetings live-streamed and recorded in full was abandoned mid-way through the debate at this month’s council meeting.
Mayor John Moran has committed money from his own devolved fund to make sure Limerick follows in the footsteps of local authorities across the country in having council meetings available to the public online.
As things stand, it is possible to watch a live-stream of local authority meetings - but in order to do this, you must be provided with a link by council officials.
However, the executive mayor wants this barrier removed, and a motion he proposed at this month’s meeting sought to put that into action.
There was a debate on the idea, and a vote was about to take place.
However, priomh-chomhairleoir Catherine Slattery abandoned the meeting after alleging the first citizen had made a remark she was unhappy with.
Prior to the meeting, Limerick’s Public Participation Network (PPN), a group of community, voluntary, social inclusion and environmental organisations operating across the city and county have also added their voice to calls to have full council meetings streamed.
Mayor Moran said: “Given the broad membership of the network across the city and county, it reflects a strong public interest in improving the processes in local government.”
