'Ask Limerick people to suggest monickers for no-name laneways in city centre'

A LOCAL councillor has called for the people of Limerick to be surveyed on the naming of laneways in the city which do not currently have names.

At this month’s metropolitan council meeting, plans were unveiled to upgrade some of Limerick’s run-down laneways to give them a new lease of life.

Four of these have no names, and Cllr Shane Hickey-O’Mara, Social Democrats, feels these could be renamed in honour of prominent Limerick people.

“Why don’t we do a consultation, why don’t we ask Limerick people what they’d like these lands to be called? Why don’t we call one John Murphy Lane, or Constance Smith Lane,” the northside councillor suggested.

His idea was seconded by Fine Gael’s Olivia O’Sullivan.

She welcomed the proposed upgrades to the laneways, saying at present, they facilitate crime and drug-taking.

The cleaner they are, the fewer places there will be for criminals to hide their proceeds, she argued.
