Power play: Limerick man appointed to top European job

A KILMEEDY man has been appointed to a senior role in the European Commission.

Peter Power is the new head of the European Commission representation in Dublin.

As part of the job, he will act as official representative of the Commission in Ireland under the authority of its president Ursula von der Leyen.

Mr Power has more than a decade of experience of experience within the European Commssion and Cabinets.

Since 2022, Mr Power has served as senior adviser to the director-general of the directorate-general for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations.

Previously, he held the role as head of cabinet for Commissioner Phil Hogan during his terms as Commissioner for Agriculture and subsequently for Trade, as well as for Commissioner Mairead McGuinness in her portfolio for financial services, financial stability, and the Capital Markets Union.

Earlier in his career, Mr Power served as head of press at the European Commission Representation in Dublin and held several roles within the Commission's Cabinets and Directorates-General, equipping him with invaluable expertise in Ireland's EU relations and the operational intricacies of a Commission Representation.

Educated at Ring College in Waterford, Mr Power was also press secretary to the British Labour grandee Lord Peter Mandelson who only this Wednesday, was confirmed as the British Ambassador to the USA in the wake of Donald Trump's election as president.

This Peter Power is not to be confused with the former Fianna Fail Minister of State and Limerick East TD who shares the same name.

He is currently the executive director of aid agency Unicef Ireland.
