YOUNG people from Limerick launched a photography exhibition featuring images of one of Limerick’s oldest communities.
Limerick Youth Service (LYS) from the King’s Island area launched their My Island photography exhibition at the Education Unit of The Hunt Museum on Tuesday, January 21.
“When we spoke with the young people about the photography project, they were keen to capture images of their lives and community,” said Michelle Manning, Youth Justice Worker at LYS.
“Many of the young people felt their community was portrayed negatively and they felt this did not represent their family and friends.”

Under the tutelage of renowned photographer Stephen Lappin, the young people learned about the art of photography, from shades of lighting, framing and angles to using the technology.
Michelle was full of praise for the participants as she thanked them for giving up their free time to take part.
“The young people are delighted with their photographs and they should be very proud of their achievements,” she said.
“The results of their endeavours are now proudly displayed in The Hunt Museum and will remain on show for the coming week with members of the public invited to visit the exhibition.”
Michelle reserved a special word of thanks for Stephen Lappin, her colleagues with LYS’ King’s Island projects for their support and commitment throughout the programme and The Hunt Museum for hosting the exhibition.
The young people who took part in the My Island photography programme are members of the King’s Island hub of the LYS Youth Diversion Project and the King’s Island & Surrounds Youth Project, that are both located at Nicholas Street Youth Space.
The Youth Diversion Project is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union with more information available at eufunds.ie
The King’s Island & Surrounds Youth Project is one of six UBU Your Place Your Space youth work projects with LYS.
LYS is a member of Youth Work Ireland and the Irish Association of Community Training Organisations and remains committed to connecting with young people and supporting them to reach their potential.
