'Preferred tenderer' named for multi-million euro road scheme

Limerick Council issues update on Adare bypass plans

The Adare bypass is being designed to remove any unncessary traffic from the village of Adare

PLANS to build a road bypass of the village of Adare have taken a big step forward this Monday.

It comes after Limerick City and County Council identified a group to construct the huge project, which will also provide a link to Foynes.

A joint venture of John Sisk and Son (Holdings) Ltd and Sorensen Civil Engineering Ltd, known as Sisk Sorensen JV, has been identified as the successful tenderer.

It is expected the contract will be formally awarded by the end of the year.

In November 2023, Government approved the construction of the road to faciliate its earliest possible delivery in view of the Ryder Cup taking place at Adare Manor in 2027.

It’s envisaged the bypass will divert any unnecessary through traffic away from Adare and remove a significant point of congestion on the N21, improving the safety and quality of life for people living and working in the village and facilitating improvements to the urban realm.

Mayor Moran said: “It is a priority of the mayoral programme to advance the Adare Bypass. To have it in place by the autumn of 2027 remains very ambitious and would represent a significant achievement given the time remaining.”

He said Limerick’s local authority will do all it can to achieve this target, but called for “the goodwill and co-operation” of everyone involved in delivering the project, and landowners who may be impacted by its construction.

The bypass is one element of the Foynes to Limerick Road project which is a 35km road connecting Limerick City to the port of Foynes.

The overall project is seen as vital for the strategic development and expansion of Shannon Foynes Port, for West Limerick and the Mid-West.

Further announcements are expected on this in the months and years to come.
