Voting is underway at polling stations across the country on the constitutional referendums on Family and Care.

Almost 3.5 million Irish citizens living in the State are eligible to vote between now and 10pm this Friday.

While President Higgins previously spent a week in St James Hospital, Dublin after "experiencing a mild transient weakness", he has made a full recovery and voted in his local polling station this Friday morning.

The President was admitted for precautionary tests on Thursday, February 29. Tests results indicated no serious or long-term concerns for the President’s health.

Upon their arrival at polling stations, voters will be given a white ballot paper for the Family Amendment and a green one for the Care amendment.

The proposals involve the insertion of additional text to article 41.1.1 of the Constitution and the deletion of text in article 41.3.1.

The green sheet of paper will ask people to vote on the care amendment. It proposes deleting articles 41.2.1 and 41.2.2 of the Constitution and inserting a new article, 42b.

Voters will be asked to vote yes or no to each proposal.

While there will be local declarations for each of the existing Dáil constituencies, the national results will be announced at Dublin Castle early on Saturday evening.
