Limerick Swimming Club host Gerry Ryan Memorial Gala at University of Limerick

This year the Gerry Ryan Memorial Gala took place in UL between January 16-18

LIMERICK Swimming Club was one of the first in the country to host a long course meet which was held at the University of Limerick's National 50m Swimming Pool in 2003.

Originally known as the 'Limerick Invitational Gala' it was subsequently renamed and became the 'Gerry Ryan Memorial' in 2007 in honour of the late and great Gerry Ryan, Head Coach and founding member of the club.

Gerry Ryan was a prominent figure in Limerick's swimming community, renowned for his dedication and contributions to the sport.

He founded the Limerick Swimming Club, fostering a nurturing environment for swimmers of all ages and skill levels. Under his leadership, the club became a cornerstone of aquatic sports in the region.

In honor of his legacy, the club established the annual Gerry Ryan Memorial Gala. This event serves as a tribute to his commitment to swimming and the local community.

The gala attracts swimmers from various clubs, promoting healthy competition and camaraderie. Through the Gerry Ryan Memorial Gala and the enduring spirit of the Limerick Swimming Club, Gerry Ryan's influence continues to inspire and support the development of swimming talent in the region.

This year the Gerry Ryan Memorial Gala took place in UL between January 16-18. The club hosted 40 clubs and over 700 swimmers from all over the country took part in this three day event.

The club were delighted to have Gerry Ryan’s wife Doris and two daughters Carol and Liz in attendance, to witness some of the racing and the club honoured Gerry by making a small presentation to them on behalf of the club. 

At the end of the gala the club presented the perpetual Gerry Ryan team trophy to the team whose swimmers received the most points over the weekend; Dolphin Swimming Club in Cork.
