The project is in line with the strategic goals of the More for Limerick Mayoral Programme, with funding being provided by General Municipal Allocations agreed by councillors representing the Limerick City West area.

The facility will be available for all members of the public to use in a responsible manner.

The cricket crease and safety batting area will consist of a concrete base and rubber shock pad with synthetic grass, while a steel structure frame with a protection net will be placed around the cricket crease. The cricket crease batting area is specifically for the use of batting practice and is not associated with open game play.

The works are proposed to begin the week commencing Monday, July 7 and will take approximately two weeks to complete.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran is delighted at the prospect.

I’m really delighted to sign off on the beginning of a special addition to Mungret Park. This is about delivering on a promise in the More for Limerick mayoral programme to find more space for cricket and support a sport that’s growing fast across our city and county," he said.

"I recently met with representatives of Limerick Cricket Club who explained the difficulties they have finding safe spaces in which to play their favourite sport. This is a positive step towards that

“I’d like to say a particular thanks to the councillors in Limerick City West who came on board with funding to help make this happen - it shows what’s possible when we work together locally for the good of our communities. It’s great to know that as soon as the end of July, kids and adults alike will be out here playing, learning, and connecting through cricket. This is what building a more healthy inclusive and vibrant Limerick looks like, one project at a time," he added.

Cathaoirleach of the Metropolitan District of Limerick, Cllr Daniel Butler, added: “Sport is a great way to bring people together, and it’s important that our public spaces reflect the interests of all the communities who call Limerick home.

"This is a welcome response to the demand for cricket facilities in Limerick city and its suburbs. I’m glad that my colleagues in Limerick City West have supported this project through local funding and I look forward to seeing it take shape in the weeks ahead," he said.

Inspections of the facility by Limerick City and County Council will be completed weekly. The contractor will return annually to complete an inspection and provide a report and costing of any necessary repairs if required.
