Dr Rachel Mullaly has been appointed by HSE Mid-West as consultant neonatologist in University Maternity Hospital Limerick

A NEW consultant neonatologist has been appointed at University Maternity Hospital Limerick (UMHL).

This brings the number of consultants in neonatal care in the Mid-West to seven.

Dr Rachel Mullaly’s appointment will strengthen specialist care for newborn babies and their families across the region.

Dr Mullaly regularly presents her work both nationally and internationally, in the areas of managing blood flow and cardiac function in newborns.

A two-storey extension and refurbishment of the neonatal intensive care unit worth €9.7 million was completed in 2025.

Dr Mullaly said: “I am delighted to be joining the neonatal team at University Maternity Hospital Limerick and to have the opportunity to contribute to the care of babies and their families across the Mid-West region.

“Neonatal medicine is a highly specialised area of healthcare where clinical expertise, teamwork and compassionate, family-centred care are essential.

“I am looking forward to working with colleagues across the HSE’s maternity and paediatric services to build on the great work that is already taking place at UMHL.”

Dr Mullaly has an MSc in neonatology from the University of Southampton and a PhD in neonatal haemodynamics from the Royal College of Surgeons.

She recently returned from Australia, having completed a year of advanced fellowship training at the Royal Children’s Hospital and the Royal Women’s Hospital.

Outside of medicine and her profession, Dr Mullaly is a keen musician and classical violinist and looks forward to continuing those pursuits in Limerick.
