Gardai are appealing for witnesses after an elderly woman died following a two-car collision in County Cavan.
Emergency services attended the scene of the fatal road traffic incident on a local road near the village of Crosskeys at around 3.30pm on Tuesday.
"One of the drivers, a woman in her 80s, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Her body has been removed to the morgue at Cavan General Hospital where a post-mortem examination is due to take place," said a garda spokesperson who added that the driver of the second vehicle, a woman in her 40s, was brought to Cavan General Hospital for assessment.
Following the incident, the road was closed to allow Garda Forensic Collision Investigators to conduct an examination of the scene which has since been completed and the road has now reopened.
Gardaí have launched an investigation and they are appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage and who were travelling in the area between 3pm and 3.30pm on Tuesday are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.
