'What have we here?' - Storm bears down on Ireland amid dramatic weather u-turn
Ireland weather experts have spotted a storm headed our way on models amid a dramatic change in our weather fortunes.
Weather Alerts Ireland posted an image of the model on Monday, saying: “Well well well what have we here!
“The models are picking up on a storm possibly impacting Ireland on Monday into Tuesday next week!
“The GFS also shows a risk of a storm but time will tell if this will materialise.
“This is a long way off for now but the GFS has been forecasting a low pressure system moving towards Ireland in its last few updates. It would depend on how deep it grows with the jetstream which is forecast to strengthen later this week.
“At this stage it is only something I am monitoring and I can keep you all up to date over the coming days.”

Met Éireann has not issued its forecast for next week but they are predicting the arrival of unsettled weather this weekend. They said: “Looking ahead it’s likely the weekend will be very unsettled with a band of rain moving over the country on Saturday, turning heavy at times followed by scattered showers for Sunday. Temperatures staying in the mid to high teens.”
In the meantime, they say there will be “a rather cloudy and misty start this morning [Tuesday] with some occasional drizzle along the west and northwest. It will become mainly dry through the afternoon but it will stay a little cloudy with a touch of drizzle lingering along Atlantic coastal counties. Highest temperatures of 17 to 21 degrees in northwesterly breezes.
“A mainly cloudy evening but dry overall apart from a few mist or drizzle patches along western counties. Northwesterly breezes and lowest overnight temperatures of 13 to 15 degrees.”
Their forecast continues: “Staying cloudy overall but mostly dry [on Wednesday]. A few light showers will drift in along western counties during the morning and afternoon however. Highest temperatures of 19 to 21 degrees and light westerly breezes.
“Rather cloudy overall with a few showers drifting in across western counties [Wednesday night]. Staying dry further east apart from the odd isolated shower. Lowest temperatures of 13 to 15 degrees in westerly breezes.
“Cloudy to start [on Thursday] with a few showers gradually clearing too. Sunny spells will develop across southern and eastern counties but it will remain cloudy elsewhere. Dry for much of the afternoon with highest temperatures of 18 to 21 degrees and northwesterly breezes.
“A mix of cloud and clear spells [on Thursday night]. The best of the dry weather will be in the south and east. A little cooler too with lowest temperatures of 9 to 13 degrees in a light northwesterly breeze.”
“A largely bright day [Friday] with plenty of sunshine and just a few isolated showers. Highest temperatures of 15 to 18 degrees and moderate northwesterly breezes.”
