A still from a video, which has been widely shared on social media, of the unfortunate collision

A VAN driver got his calculations badly wrong when attempting to drive under a bridge in Limerick city this Tuesday.

The vehicle struck Sarsfield Bridge as it was travelling through the underpass at Honan’s Quay. There are no reports of any injuries suffered by the driver but the van was damaged in the collision.

A video of the road traffic incident has been widely shared on social media. The van driver can take some solace from the fact that he isn’t the first and probably won’t be the last to hit the bridge at that spot.

Reflective black and yellow stripes have been painted on the bridge to warn motorists. There are also signs saying “Caution” and warning drivers that the maximum height is 2.5 metres.

There were minor traffic delays while the van was being removed.
