'I'm going solo travelling as a young woman - here's how I made the trip safe'

With solo travel becoming more and more popular I decided to embark on a solo trip to sunny Spain, but can you blame me for being a bit apprehensive? This is how I tried to make it as safe as possible as a 23-year-old woman

For the first time ever, I will embark on a solo travel trip to Cambrils in Spain as a young Irish woman looking to break out of my comfort zone and challenge myself like never before.

After inter-railing with a group of friends last summer, I feel like a solo trip is the next step I need to embrace all that life has to offer.

The main reason for this solo trip is because I am a naturally introverted person who loves being in my own company. Nothing sounds better than being by a pool in Spain with my Kindle, my phone turned on Do Not Disturb and enjoying the peace and relaxation for four nights in a sunny resort.

If you told me a few years ago that I would be doing this, I would have laughed in your face. But I really feel like I am ready to do this.

I've made the trip as safe as I possibly can for my first time being abroad alone; at least I think I have.

One of the biggest misconceptions I would say is that it's going to be boring or too lonely. But in reality, I think it's going to be an incredible opportunity to fully be by myself like I've never had the opportunity to do before. I'll be fully independent for four days, going by my own accord and building confidence and bravery.

As someone who is very interested in moving and living abroad in the future, I think this is exactly the push I need to brave the move.

Another perk for me is not having to worry about what I look like! I'm planning on packing light. I didn't have to pay 30 plus Euro for luggage and instead I'll be bringing a backpack with bare essentials, three or four outfits and a swim suit.

I have pre-booked transport straight to my accommodation. I booked a resort right by the beach so I won't need to travel far and I have also pre-paid for breakfast and dinner right in the resort as well so I won't have to leave to eat in restaurants.

This will give me peace of mind that if I don't want to leave the resort, I won't really have to.

Something I did to take me out of comfort zone even further is book a two-hour boat trip that takes you all along the coast of Cambrils. You can have a couple of drinks and even jump from the boat into the sea. I did something like this in Portugal last year with friends and absolutely loved it.

I guess I won't really know if this is a good idea or not until I'm actually there.

Will I freak out and wish I was back at home on my first night? Or will I absolutely love it and book my next solo trip before I even come home?

Is it too dangerous for a young woman to do something like this by herself? Or have I made it fool proof and I shouldn't even worry?

I guess I'll find out next month.....wish me luck! And will you plan on solo travelling?
