Ireland is among top three countries in Europe with highest energy bills
According data by Query.no, household consumers in Germany, Ireland and Denmark face the highest electricity prices in Europe.
Ireland saw the largest price increases from the first half of 2024 compared to the first half of 2023 in all of Europe.
Irish households are paying the third highest electricity prices in Europe, as Irish customers are paying approximately 30% more per year than the average EU home, according to data from Eurostat.
Ireland saw an increase of 24.7% in the price of electricity from 2012 to 2022, with electricity currently costing €374.60 per MWh.
This is 52% higher than the European average.
Hungary is paying the least for electricity, at 55% less than the European average, costing €110.90 per MWh.

Irish people on social media have expressed anger and frustration over the huge costs of energy bills in Ireland.
One user commented, "This isn’t fair!" and another added "Even now with the good weather the bills are extortionate".

"Mine is nearly a €1000 every two months since before Christmas and before that it was still pretty dear," another person said.
Another frustrated person said "no surprise as this current government just don't care that we live in rip off Ireland. There seems to be zero price regulation in Ireland".
