Anthony Gallagher was killed less than 100 yards from his home

Anthony Gallagher, who lost his life as a result of a road traffic collision in Letterkenny in the early hours of St Patrick’s Day, will be laid to rest on Thursday.

Late of Charlie Daly Terrace in Letterkenny, Mr Gallagher was killed less than 100 yards from his home after being struck by a vehicle at Lower Main Street shortly before 3am.

He and his brother, Martin, were critically injured. 

The men were taken to Letterkenny University Hospital with Anthony subsequently dying from his injuries, while Martin was airlifted to Galway University Hospital, where he remains under the care of medical staff for serious injuries. 

The late Anthony Gallagher, who was in his 60s, worked close to his home as a ‘lollipop man’, helping hundreds of children on their way to and from local schools.

Anthony's remains will repose in Eternal Light Chapel of Rest, Mountain Top, Letterkenny from 6-9pm on Wednesday, March 19.

His funeral Mass will take place at St. Eunan's Cathedral on Thursday at 11am followed by interment in Conwal Cemetery.

Predeceased by mother Brigid and aunt Rosaleen, he is survived by his brother Martin, cousin Kevin and his wife Dolores, as well as extended family, good neighbours and many friends.

A vigil took place in Letterkenny on Monday evening, organised by neighbour Colm McDaid.

Monsignor Kevin Gillespie, local county councillors, and members of the public were in attendance, while Davin McDonagh played Amazing Grace on the bagpipes.

The driver of the car, a male in his late teens, was arrested at the scene This matter has been referred to GSOC due to an earlier interaction between An Garda Síochána and the driver of this vehicle, a taxi.

The arrested male has since been released without charge. Files will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions and Garda Youth Diversion Bureau. 

Gardai have issued a fresh appeal for witnesses to the tragic collision.

A spokesperson said:  “Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) who were travelling in the area between 2.30am and 3.30am on Monday the 17th of March, are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

“In particular, Gardaí are appealing to anybody who was in the area between Dry Arch Roundabout and the Oldtown Road at the time. 

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Letterkenny Garda Station on (074) 916 7100, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”
