A woman who sustained serious injuries when she was allegedly assaulted in her home earlier this week has died in hospital.

Sharon Naughton, who was aged in her fifties, was found by gardai who attended a property in Ballinasloe, County Galway at around 7pm on Monday.

Given her injuries, she was immediately taken to Portiuncula University Hospital in the town where she remained in a critical condition until she passed away.

Confirming the development, a garda spokesperson said: "The female, aged in  her 50s, receiving medical treatment in Portiuncula University Hospital passed away from her injuries, yesterday, Thursday, December 12, 2024."

The spokesperson added that the local coroner has been notified and that a post mortem examination will take place in due course.

Investigating gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have any information about the incident to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact Ballinasloe garda station at 090 963 1890, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any garda station.

A man who was arrested following Monday's incident was remanded in custody when he appeared before the local district court on Thursday.

Aged in his 50s, he has been charged, under the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, with assaulting Ms Naughton causing her harm.

Investigations are ongoing.
