Clare hotel owner elected as President of the United States

Donald Trump has been elected the 47th president of the United States.

With a win in Wisconsin, the Clare hotel owner cleared the 270 electoral votes needed to clinch the presidency.

According to Boylesports, bets are already going down on the new president teeing it up at his County Clare golf course in Doonbeg in the first 100 days of his second presidential term.

Congratulating Mr Trump, Clare MEP Michael McNamara shared a picture he snapped of the new president-elect on a visit to the Trump International Golf Links and Hotel Doonbeg.

Speaking to his supporters this Wednesday morning, November 6, Mr Trump claimed he had won “an unprecedented and powerful mandate”, marking an extraordinary comeback for a former president who refused to accept defeat four years ago, sparked a violent insurrection at the US Capitol and was convicted of felony charges.

The results cap a historically tumultuous and competitive election season that included two assassination attempts targeting Mr Trump and a shift to a new Democratic nominee just a month before the party’s convention.

He inherits a range of challenges when he assumes office on January 20, including heightened political polarisation and global crises that are testing America’s influence abroad.

He's the first former president to return to power since Grover Cleveland regained the White House in the 1892 election, the first person convicted of a felony to be elected president and, at 78, is the oldest person elected to the office.
