Baby girl, 12 months, in hospital after being mauled by XL Bully dog in Co Kerry

An infant is receiving treatment in hospital after being mauled by an XL Bully dog in Co Kerry.

The baby girl, who is only 12 months old, has undergone surgery after the incident, which occurred in the village of Lixnaw on Saturday evening.

An XL Bully dog has been destroyed after it mauled an infant in Co Kerry, it has emerged.

The baby girl, who is just 12 months old, has now undergone major surgery after the horror attack in the Lixnaw area of the county on Saturday evening.

Gardaí are investigating the incident and have confirmed that the dog was destroyed by veterinary services.

The baby girl is currently receiving treatment at Cork University Hospital.

This comes over a month after the Irish government announced a ban on XL Bully type dogs.

A ban which will come into effect in two phases next year, in October and in February.

It will be illegal to breed, sell, rehome or import XL Bully dogs from October 1.

In June, 23-year-old Nicole Lisa Marie Morey, from Limerick, was killed by her dogs - one of which was an XL Bully.
