‘He’s a fighter’: Fundraiser set up for young GAA player injured in USA taxi crash

A young GAA player remains in hospital after suffering serious injuries in a taxi crash in America.

Shane Campbell, a 22-year-old student from Kells, Co Meath, went to Chicago to work for the summer, like so many students on a J1 Visa do.

However, Shane’s American dream turned into a nightmare after the taxi he was a passenger in was involved in a horrific car crash. The young man has been a patient in John H Stroger Hospital of Cook County since June 5.

Initially, Shane was in an induced coma. He suffered several broken bones, as well as significant abdominal trauma.

In an update posted on a fundraiser page, his family said that the young man was now off the ventilator.

“He has endured six weeks in bed with such a list of severe injuries, but he is showing great strength and spirit, he'll get there. Still bumps to overcome daily and new obstacles put in his each day. But he's a fighter,” they said.
